A Word From Our Chair

Month and Date Here

March 2009 sees the 25th anniversary of the miners strike.

Margret Thatcher’s determination to push through pit closures and crush the national union of mine workers was more than matched by the miners resolve to save job’s, stop mines closing and insure deep mining had a future.

A year of conflict and hardship followed causing huge divisions in many communities, the end result being a hollow victory for Thatcher and her cohorts, resulting in the decimation of deep mining in Britain and thousands of skilled miners consigned to a life of unemployment and poverty whilst we imported coal from abroad to fire our power stations, this was totally senseless and economically inept.

We in the anti-poverty movement must never forget the enormous sacrifices these proud miners made in defence of their industry and can only hope Britain never sees workers put in this position ever again.
